Valor Mortis Catalysts Guide: Farming, Clots and the James's Iron Bench Economy
How Catalysts work in Valor Mortis: the Remnant farm, Catalyst Clots, Surplus, and when to buy Blade Materials from James's Iron Bench versus finding them.
Catalysts are Valor Mortis's souls — the currency you spend at Lanterns to level the unified skill tree, and also the currency James's Iron Bench charges for weapon upgrade materials. Managing both sinks is the real economy of the game.
Income Sources
- Kills — the baseline. The Surplus Amber increases the drop.
- The Remnant of the Iron Regiment farm — the three-weak-point variant (Chapter 5 Under the Bridge, Chapter 10 Chapel) nets tens of thousands per cycle via Blunderbuss-into-deathblow. This is the metric that matters; see the leveling guide.
- Catalyst Clots — inventory items that convert to Catalysts at Lanterns. Pop them to cross thresholds, not to hoard.
- Teddy's Giant Whisker Gift — 30,000 Catalysts from the Mice quests.
- Exploration — chests and red-eyed elite guards carry meaningful payouts.
The Two Sinks
Skill tree at Lanterns — the primary sink. Survivability nodes first, build nodes second (see the skill tree guide).
James's Iron Bench — sells upgrade materials: Crude Blade Material 1,500 / Pure 3,000 / Distilled 6,000 Catalysts. Sports Rant's launch guide notes the tradeoff directly: buying materials saves time near an upgrade, but every Catalyst spent on materials is one not spent on levels. Buy only when you are close to a weapon milestone; farm the rest.
The Disciplines
- Level before bosses, not after deaths. A pre-boss node is worth more than a post-death apology.
- Do not bank Catalysts through the Fortress. The game takes agency after Captain Raphael; arrive maxed for your level.
- Quintessential materials never come from the Bench — only three Blade versions exist in the world (see the locations guide).
